An Archetype is a hero with a pre-determined build. Inspired by many classic comic book heroes and heroines, Archetypes are designed to allow users to jump right into gameplay without worrying about builds and stats. Each Archetype has very specific powers and superstats geared towards a certain role: Avenger, Brawler, Guardian, Protector and Sentinel.
For example, The Inferno focuses heavily on ranged attacks—his role is Avenger. Archetypes are locked into their specific roles. Players, however, are still able to select their Travel Powers, Talents and Advantages.
Archetypes are available to both Gold Members and Silver Players. There is no difference between an Archetype used by a Gold or Silver player: Archetypes retain the same powers and superstats regardless.
Base Archetypes are free for Silver Players, whereas Premium Archetypes can be purchased from the C-Store. Gold Members always have access to all Archetypes.
There are currently 8 Base Archetypes available to Silver Players and Gold Members. New Premium Archetypes are added periodically and are purchasable by Silver Members. Gold Members have full access to any released Premium Archetypes. To see a list of Base and Premium Archetypes, visit the Main Archetype page or the “Powers” category in the C-Store.
Also, for a limited time, you can try out select Premium Archetypes before purchase! Click on the Archetype Rotation tab above for details.
Free-form heroes have a different point-earning schedule than their Archetype counterparts. Instead of earning two points every other level, Free-form heroes will earn one or two Advantage Points every level after level 7. This gives Free-form heroes more Advantage Points early on. Archetypes and Free-form Heroes have the same number of Talent and Advantage Points.
Free-form heroes are allotted 14 powers, as opposed to the 11 powers given to Archetypes. This allows users to customize their Free-form heroes to fulfill any role. Also, Free-form heroes can unlock passives and blocks as early as level 6, depending on other power choices, while the Archetype passive power can be earned at level 8 and the block power at level 14.
